What Is Clean Hair Color? This Is All You Need to Know
Clean beauty: it's a trend we're all for, and one that inspired our latest hair color launch. But, what does it really mean for your hair color to be clean? We're teaching you all about the hair-loving ingredients we added, and the one's we left out of our first clean (and vegan!) permanent hair color, Total Color.
A strong solution put into hair color in order to open the hair cuticle and deposit color during the coloration process and is known for its unpleasant odor.
A commonly used preservative in hair color and care products that some consumers are mindful of not using.
Many hair color products contain surfactants that are sulfates – our formula does not contain sulfate surfactants.
Silicones are made from synthetic materials that provide unique properties including added ‘slip’ for when combing and styling hair. In its various forms, silicones can have anti-frizz properties and also provide a protective film. However, silicones can also weigh hair down.
- Mineral Oil
A petroleum-based oil. In hair color and hair care products, it can cause build up and weigh hair down.
Phthalates are used as solvents and plasticizers in shampoo and styling packaging. As part of Total Color's™ eco-friendly packaging initiative, we decided to create packaging without phthalates.
Some hair color and conditioner formulas contain wheat proteins, which means gluten is in the formula. Total Color™ hair color has 0% gluten, which gave us extra room for natural oils like Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil and Camellia Oil.
An added bonus is that this clean permanent hair color is also vegan! Total Color™ hair color formula does not contain any animal derived ingredients or animal byproducts.
- Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil
Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant that do not contain pychoactive properties. We include this oil in our nourishing cream formula to ensure your hair is lovingly cared for while you color. Small but mighty.

Treasured in Japan, Camellia Flower Oil is as fragrant and beautiful as its alluring blossom. Our Botanical Enriched Conditioning Gloss (curated specifically by shade) is infused with Camellia Oil.
